FAKARAVA ATOLL, FRENCH POLYNESIA 2019
A Week in Fakarava Atoll: Diving into the Wall of Sharks
In late 2019, I spent an unforgettable week in Fakarava Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in French Polynesia. This remote paradise is famous for its crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and abundant marine life. Among the many breathtaking experiences Fakarava offers, the highlight of my trip was diving in the legendary “Wall of Sharks.”
Fakarava Atoll is part of the Tuamotu Archipelago and is known for its untouched beauty. The atoll has a unique balance of pristine nature and small, welcoming local communities. For those seeking adventure and serenity in equal measure, Fakarava is a dream come true.
The pinnacle of my stay was the dive at the South Pass, known as Passe de Tumakohua, where the famous Wall of Sharks is located. As I descended into the deep blue, I found myself surrounded by hundreds of grey reef sharks. This awe-inspiring phenomenon happens because strong ocean currents funnel through the narrow pass, attracting an immense variety of marine life. The sharks glide effortlessly, creating an almost surreal spectacle.
The dive itself was adrenaline-pumping but peaceful. Observing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat was an experience of raw beauty. Fakarava’s underwater world is a haven for marine biodiversity, with sharks being the stars of the show. It’s not just the sharks, though; the coral reefs are teeming with vibrant fish, rays, and other marine species, making every moment underwater an adventure.
My time in Fakarava was more than just a dive trip; it was a chance to connect with an untouched ecosystem. The Wall of Sharks is one of the most humbling and exhilarating experiences I’ve had in the ocean, a testament to the beauty and power of the natural world.
